A Self-Care Conversation with Artist Frederik Molenschot:

Below are Frederik Molenschot insights on how self-care practices influence his artistic journey. In this interview, Molenschot discusses the rituals, habits, and personal philosophies that keep him grounded and inspired, revealing the connection between well-being and creative expression.

AS: What are some self-care practices that you find most benefit your work & creative output?

FM: I find that integrating regular workouts and maintaining a healthy diet are crucial self-care practices that significantly boost my creative output. Despite my love for food and drinking, which can sometimes be indulgent, sticking to a fitness routine and making healthier eating choices help me feel much better overall. This balance supports my energy levels and keeps my mind sharp for creative work.

AS: In what ways do you nurture your mental and emotional health to maintain creativity and inspiration?

FM: Nurturing my mental and emotional health involves ensuring that I spend quality time with my family. Living and working in the same place can blur the boundaries between personal and professional life, so dedicating time to connect with my loved ones is for me essential. This practice grounds me emotionally and provides a steady source of inspiration and support, which is vital for my creative process.

“BALANCE CURIOSITY WITH DISCIPLINE” - Frederik Molenschot

AS: What practices or routines do you incorporate into your daily life to support your work while maintaining your creative energy and mental well-being?

FM: I incorporate several routines into my daily life to support my work and maintain creative energy. Regular physical exercise is a cornerstone, as it keeps me physically fit and mentally alert. Additionally, I make it a point to have structured breaks and mealtimes to ensure I’m not overextending myself.

By balancing work with family time, I create a rhythm that balances both productivity and well-being.

AS: How do you handle setbacks or challenges in your creative endeavours while still prioritizing your well-being?

FM: When I am dealing with setbacks in my creative work, I usually take a drive around to observe my surroundings. Exploring various landscapes, buildings, and construction sites helps with new ideas and offers a fresh perspective. I also always carry my Polaroid camera with me to capture interesting forms and moments in the landscape.

These outings are super important for me and my creativity. They provide a mental and physical break from my usual workspace. However, I also find that watching online videos can be both a blessing and a curse. While it can be a time sink, it often exposes me to beautiful content and what’s happening in the art and design world. Engaging with this content and discussing it with others keeps me connected to the rest of the world and often provides inspiration for my creative output.

Balancing this online engagement with real-world explorations helps me handle challenges while maintaining my well-being and family connections.

AS: What specific environment or settings do you find especially conducive to both self-care and creative inspiration?

FM: The most conducive environments for my self-care and creative inspiration are a mix of my home and the road. At home, I enjoy a tranquil setting that allows me to relax and spend time with my family, while for creative stimulation, I drive around to observe various landscapes and structures, capturing new forms and inspirations with my Polaroid and video cameras.

This balance between home comfort and exploring the outside world keeps my creativity flowing while supporting my well-being.

AS: Best self-care advice you have received?

FM: The best self-care advice I’ve received is to “balance curiosity with discipline.” This advice, highlights the importance of staying curious and exploring new ideas while maintaining a disciplined approach to avoid distractions. Discovering new forms and inspirations from the world around me, without letting them overshadow real-world experiences, ensures that I stay inspired and well-balanced. This approach helps me integrate new inspirations into my creative process while keeping my focus on what truly matters, including my family and personal well-being.
